First Nine Weeks
What am I learning?
In Spanish 2, overall I am learning how to write quicker, more correct, and with a larger vocabulary. I have learned the pretarite and present progressive tense, and both help me to vary my writing so it's not all the same. Right now I am learning how to talk about chores and how to complain about having to do chores using phrases such as "No es justo." I'm also learning how to talking about hobbies and the way I spend my free time.
How do I learn?
I learn mainly by doing practice with worksheets and by playing games in class. I also like doing informal writings when Mrs. Jorge corrects them and then hands them back. This helps me to recognize what mistakes I'm making and correct them the next time I write.
Where am I in progress towards my goals?
I am progressing well towards my goals. I can now talk even better in Spanish and often try to use it outside of Spanish class. For example, I tried to describe my breakfast in Spanish this morning: Los huevos, la leche, y el pan tostado con jalea de frases. I can also now write better in Spanish. Just the other day in Spanish class we wrote a paper in Spanish comparing the lives of men and women. I am very pleased that I could write about such a topic in only Spanish.
Why am I learning?
Unfortunately, I have had to add a new goal since last semester. I learned over winter break that my family and I are moving back to Texas at the end of this semester. I wish to continue my Spanish education in Spanish 3, but I have a feeling that a Spanish 3 class in Texas will be harder and probably well above the level I will be at at the conclusion of my Spanish 2 class in Tennessee. Therefore, I must work even harder on the finer points of Spanish right now. I am now learning in order to be able to take a Spanish 3 class in Texas.
Second Nine Weeks
What am I learning?
Right now I am learning how to talk about my childhood using the imperfect tense and phrases like "de nina" and "de joven." We just finished learning about irregular verbs like "sandal verbs," stem-changing verbs, and pretarite irregulars that combine pretarite -ar and -er endings. Overall, I feel a lot better about the pretarite tense and can use it now very easily.
How do I learn?
I learn best by doing practice worksheets and informal writings. I also find it easy to learn vocabulary because of the powerpoint presentation Mrs. Jorge shows to us at the beginning of each chapter. I'm a visual learner, so the pictures on the powerpoint help the definition stick in my head.
Where am I in progress towards my goals?
I feel like I am making definite progress towards my goals. I have learned several new verb tenses since Spanish I, and a lot of new vocab. This helps me to better understand written Spanish. I often try to practice my Spanish by reading the Spanish translation of signs in public places. Now that I have a lot of new vocab and verb tenses, I find it easier to do this. I am also more comfortable speaking in Spanish. I still need to work on speaking, but I know I am getting better.
Why am I learning?
I guess I like this question, because it points me back to the reason I decided to take Spanish in the first place. At the beginning of Spanish I, my first and foremost reason for taking Spanish was because I wanted to help people. That was pretty much the deciding factor for me to take Spanish over Latin. Whether by becoming a missionary to a Spanish-speaking country or having the ability to translate for a Spanish speaker, I still want to help people. I admit that sometimes I get frustrated with the overall maturity level of the kids in my Spanish class, but I just have to remember that there is a concrete goal set before me. And honestly, I think I can put up with a few immature kids in order to have a skill that I can use to help others for a lifetime.
